Modern genomic studies confirm that all domestic dogs share a common ancestor with wolves. A 2020 study in Nature analyzed ancient DNA and showed dogs diverged from an extinct wolf lineage between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. The research identified specific genes linked to starch digestion and behavior that distinguish dogs from wolves read the Nature study.

Whole-genome comparisons show that breeds as different as Chihuahuas and Great Danes cluster within the same wolf-derived lineage. The domestication process involved selection for tameness, smaller skulls, and floppy ears, yet all breeds retain the wolf genetic blueprint.
