Size, Anatomy, and Measurement Standards

Scientists measure squid size using mantle length (from the back of the head to the tail fin tip) and total length (including tentacles). Giant squid mantle length commonly reaches 2 to 2.5 meters, with total length often reported between 6 and 13 meters, depending on whether tentacles are stretched or intact. Colossal squid mantle length can exceed 2.5 meters, and estimates of total length reach up to 14 meters based on specimens and beak size allometric equations.

Eye diameter in the largest individuals can exceed 25 centimeters, making them among the largest eyes in the animal kingdom. These measurements are derived from in situ video, trawl-caught specimens, and necropsies, and they are cross-checked with museum collections and published morphometric tables. Researchers use laser scaling and known reference objects in the frame to convert pixel measurements in video frames into real-world dimensions.
