Some species use resin or soil with natural antifungal properties to line brood chambers. These behaviors reduce transmission rates and lower pathogen loads inside colonies, functioning as a form of social immunity that complements their biochemical defenses.

Common Diseases That Affect Ants

Ants are vulnerable to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and microsporidian parasites. Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana are entomopathogenic fungi that penetrate the ant exoskeleton and kill the host within days. Infected ants often leave the nest to die alone, a behavior that limits spore dispersal and protects the colony, as documented by research linked on ScienceDirect.

Viruses such as deformed wing virus and acute bee paralysis virus can spill over from bees into ant populations. Pathogen Spread and Colony-Level Responses

In some species, infected individuals self-isolate or receive care from nestmates, which can extend their survival but also risks spreading the pathogen to caregivers.

Researchers track disease dynamics in ant colonies using molecular tools and field observations. Findings from PNAS show that pathogen pressure can shape colony structure, foraging patterns, and reproductive strategies. Understanding how ants get sick and recover informs broader studies on disease ecology, social immunity, and potential applications in human health and pest management.
