Recovery time varies from minutes to hours, depending on the species and exposure duration.
Veterinary sources note that even when an iguana appears dead after cold exposure, internal damage may already be present. Repeated or prolonged cold events can cause lasting harm to the liver, kidneys, and digestive system. Owners who find cold-stunned iguanas should seek professional care rather than assume the animal will return to normal on its own.

The green iguana, black iguana, and spiny-tailed iguana are among the most common species in this range. When temperatures drop below their tolerance range, they become vulnerable to predation, starvation, and freezing injury.
Some related lizards in the family Iguanidae show limited cold tolerance, but they are not the same as the large iguanas kept as pets. Studies and wildlife reports from Florida and the Caribbean document occasional mass cold-stunning events, but these events rarely produce animals that were truly frozen and revived.
