Hammerhead Shark Hunting and Eating Stingrays
Hammerhead sharks, especially species like the great hammerhead, are known predators of stingrays. Their wide, flattened heads, called cephalofoils, help them pin stingrays against the seafloor during hunts. This adaptation gives them a clear advantage when tracking prey in sandy coastal habitats and shallow reef flats. Great hammerheads, scalloped hammerheads, and smooth hammerheads have all been documented hunting stingrays. Their size and wide head span allow them to tackle larger stingray species that smaller sharks cannot handle. Smooth hammerheads and scalloped hammerheads, which are generally smaller, focus on rays that match their body size and mouth capacity. This size-matching strategy is common among apex predators and helps reduce hunting costs.
Stingray species targeted include Atlantic stingrays, southern stingrays, and various whiptail stingrays depending on the region. Hammerheads often hunt alone, using electroreception from ampullae of Lorenzini to detect hidden rays buried in sand. This sensory advantage is especially effective in low-visibility environments, where visual tracking would be difficult. The combination of stealth, sensory detection, and physical pinning makes hammerheads efficient stingray hunters.
Habitat, Timing, and Ecological Role
Hammerhead sharks hunt stingrays in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and continental shelves where rays are abundant. Seasonal movements bring hammerheads into warmer, shallower habitats during prey-bloom periods, increasing encounters with stingrays. These hunting grounds often overlap with popular human activity zones, which is why scientists and conservation groups track shark-ray interactions near beaches and fishing areas.
As apex predators, hammerhead sharks help regulate stingray populations, which in turn affects the health of seagrass beds and shellfish communities. Removing too many stingrays can lead to overgrazing of seagrass, impacting smaller fish and invertebrates that depend on these habitats.
