Have Humans Been to Saturn
No human has ever traveled to Saturn. All Saturn exploration has been conducted by uncrewed spacecraft launched by national space agencies and private companies. As of the newest public data, Saturn remains a robotic exploration target, with no crewed flights planned to the planet itself. NASA's Cassini mission ended in 2017 after 13 years orbiting Saturn, returning the most detailed data ever collected from the planet and its moons.
While humans have not visited Saturn, crewed missions have reached the Moon, and multiple agencies are planning deeper solar system exploration. Current human spaceflight focuses on low Earth orbit, the Moon, and eventually Mars, with Saturn missions remaining in the robotic and precursor research phase for the foreseeable future.
Current Uncrewed Missions and Data About Saturn
Past Missions
NASA's Cassini-Huygens mission launched in 1997 and arrived at Saturn in 2004. The Huygens probe, built by the European Space Agency, landed on Titan in 2005, returning the first surface images from a moon in the outer solar system. Cassini ended its mission with a controlled descent into Saturn's atmosphere in September 2017.
NASA's Juno mission, while primarily focused on Jupiter, has provided comparative data that helps scientists understand gas giant formation and behavior relevant to Saturn studies. No active spacecraft is currently orbiting Saturn, but data from past missions continues to be analyzed.
Planned Crewed Flights and Future Human Exploration
NASA and Artemis Program
NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence as a stepping stone for deeper space exploration. The agency's human exploration roadmap focuses on the Moon and Mars as primary crewed destinations, with no current crewed Saturn mission scheduled.
SpaceX's Starship is being developed as a fully reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle intended to enable long-duration human spaceflight. While Starship targets Mars as a primary goal, its capabilities could support future outer solar system precursor missions. No crewed flights to Saturn are currently planned by any agency or company.
