How Many People Did the Zodiac Killer Kill

The Zodiac Killer is linked to at least five confirmed murders and two confirmed survivors in Northern California between 1968 and 1969. Law enforcement and researchers generally cite five deaths as the core confirmed count, while the total number of victims attributed to the Zodiac ranges from five to an estimated ten or more depending on the source and methodology used FBI.

In addition to the confirmed cases, several unsolved homicides and attempted attacks in the Bay Area have been examined for possible Zodiac connections, but most remain officially unlinked. The San Francisco Police Department and the Vallejo Police Department maintain open case files, and the total number of people the Zodiac Killer may have targeted remains an active investigative question rather than a settled figure.

Confirmed Victims and Attacks by the Zodiac Killer

The first confirmed Zodiac attack occurred on December 20, 1968, near Benicia, when David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen were shot on Lake Herman Road, followed by the July 4, 1969, attack on Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau at Blue Rock Springs Park, where Ferrin died and Mageau survived Vallejo Police Department.

The third confirmed incident took place on September 27, 1969, at Lake Berryessa, where Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard were stabbed; Shepard died two days later while Hartnell survived and provided detailed information about the attacker. The fourth and fifth confirmed victims were Paul Stine, killed on October 11, 1969, in San Francisco, and an unidentified couple known as the Cheri Jo Bates victims, whose 1966 murder in Riverside has been debated in connection with the Zodiac Forbes.

How Many People Were Targeted by the Zodiac Killer

Beyond the confirmed cases, the Zodiac Killer sent letters to newspapers claiming responsibility for additional attacks and hinting at further victims, which has led researchers to estimate that the total number of people targeted could be higher than the official confirmed count Seattle Times.

Some investigators have linked the Zodiac to other Bay Area crimes, including the 1966 murder of Cheri Jo Bates and several unexplained shootings, but these connections remain unproven in court. The exact number of people the Zodiac Killer targeted is still debated among criminologists, historians, and law enforcement agencies using modern forensic review.
