Current Evidence for Water on the Moon
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2009 first detected water molecules and hydroxyl signatures on the lunar surface. The latest data from NASA's SOFIA observatory confirmed water in sunlit areas at the Clavius crater, showing concentrations of about 100 to 400 parts per million. Radar and neutron spectrometer measurements from Chandrayaan-1 and the Lunar Prospector mission support these models. How Moon Water Could Support Future Missions
Water ice can be processed into hydrogen and oxygen for rocket propellant, making the Moon a potential refueling depot for deep-space missions. SpaceX and other launch providers have studied lunar-derived propellant to reduce launch costs from Earth for Mars missions.
