Riluzole, the first FDA-approved drug for ALS, modestly extends survival by two to three months on average by reducing glutamate excitotoxicity in motor neurons. Edaravone, another FDA-approved treatment, has been shown to slow the decline in physical function in a subset of patients, particularly those with early-stage disease. In 2023, the FDA approved Qalsody (tofersen) for the treatment of ALS associated with a mutation in the superoxide dismutase 1 gene, marking a significant advance in targeted therapy for a specific genetic subtype of ALS. Clinical trials continue to explore gene therapies, stem cell approaches, and combination treatments aimed at slowing or halting disease progression.
