Major Corporate Headquarters and Employers

Chicago hosts the operational or legal headquarters of several large public companies with significant national and global reach. Boeing moved its corporate headquarters to Arlington, Virginia in 2020, but remains a major presence in the Chicago area with substantial operations and workforce. Caterpillar, the heavy equipment and engine conglomerate, relocated its headquarters to Irving, Texas in 2024 while maintaining a large operational footprint in the Chicago metro area. McDonald's, the global fast-food chain, is headquartered in Chicago and remains a major local employer and economic anchor. Forbes has detailed the economic impact of these corporate headquarters on the city.

The Chicago metropolitan area is home to a dense concentration of Fortune 500 companies, consistently ranking among the top U.S. metro areas by number of such firms. Major financial institutions with a significant Chicago presence include Citadel LLC, a leading market maker and hedge fund, and Morningstar, a prominent investment research firm. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade, now part of CME Group, are central to global derivatives markets and keep the city at the heart of financial infrastructure. The SEC EDGAR database lists filings for many of these publicly traded Chicago-based entities.

Political and Civic Leadership

Chicago's municipal government is led by the Mayor of Chicago, currently Brandon Johnson, who took office in May 2023. The Chicago City Council, the legislative branch, consists of 50 aldermen, each representing one of the city's 50 wards. The city operates under a strong-mayor system where the mayor oversees city departments and proposes the annual budget. The official City of Chicago website provides current information on the mayor's office and city agencies.

At the state level, Illinois is governed by the Governor, currently J.B. Pritzker, who took office in January 2019. The Illinois General Assembly, consisting of the Senate and House of Representatives, meets in Springfield, but Chicago's state legislators play a significant role in shaping policy affecting the city. Federally, Chicago is represented in the U.S. Senate by two senators and in the U.S. House of Representatives by a delegation whose districts cover different parts of the city and its suburbs.

Higher Education and Research Institutions

The University of Chicago, a private research university in the Hyde Park neighborhood, is one of the city's most prominent academic institutions. It is associated with numerous Nobel laureates and houses the National Opinion Research Center, a leading social science research organization. Illinois Institute of Technology, also in Chicago, is known for its programs in technology and architecture, with its campus designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Northwestern University, while technically located in Evanston just north of Chicago, has a significant presence in the city's Loop through its Kellogg School of Management and other programs. DePaul University and Loyola University Chicago are the two largest Catholic universities in the United States and are major employers and educational institutions within the city limits. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings lists these institutions among top global universities.
