The kissing bug, a member of the Triatominae subfamily, feeds on blood and can transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these bugs are found in the Americas, particularly in rural areas of Latin America, and are increasingly documented in the southern United States.
According to the CDC, the kissing bug gets its name from its tendency to bite people near the mouth or eyes, often while they sleep. The danger lies not in the bite itself but in the parasite present in the bug's feces, which can enter the body through the bite wound or mucous membranes if a person rubs the area.
How Chagas Disease Spreads and Its Health Impact
Chagas disease has two phases: acute and chronic. The acute phase is often mild or symptom-free, but the chronic phase can develop decades later and cause serious cardiac and digestive complications, according to the World Health Organization.
The WHO estimates that approximately 6 to 7 million people worldwide are infected with T. cruzi, with the majority living in Latin America. In the United States, the CDC states that more than 300,000 people may be living with Chagas disease, most acquired in endemic countries. The parasite can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and congenital transmission from mother to child.
Prevention, Diagnosis, and Current Efforts
Prevention focuses on reducing exposure to kissing bugs by improving housing conditions, using insecticides, and practicing good hygiene to avoid rubbing bug feces into bite wounds. Blood banks in many countries now screen for T. cruzi to prevent transfusion-related transmission.
Diagnosis requires specific blood tests to detect T. cruzi antibodies, and treatment is most effective during the acute phase. The drugs benznidazole and nifurtimox are available through the CDC for treating Chagas disease. Organizations such as the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative work on improving access to diagnostics and treatments for Chagas disease and other neglected tropical diseases.
