When Did Coca-Cola Change Their Formula

Original Formula and Early Recipe History

Coca-Cola was created in 1886 by pharmacist John Pemberton in Atlanta. The original syrup combined coca leaf extract, kola nut caffeine, sugar, caramel color, and phosphoric acid. Asa Candler later built the brand into a national bottling company. The drink became a symbol of American soft drinks and one of the most recognized brands globally according to Forbes.

The formula was treated as a trade secret and stored in a vault at the World of Coca-Cola museum. For decades, the company relied on high-fructose corn syrup in U.S. production while using sugar in many international markets. The recipe remained largely unchanged until consumer testing and competitive pressure in the mid-1980s prompted a major reformulation effort.

New Coke Launch and the 1985 Formula Change

On April 23, 1985, The Coca-Cola Company replaced its flagship formula with a sweeter, smoother version called New Coke. The change followed blind taste tests that showed many consumers preferred the sweeter taste of Pepsi in direct comparisons. The company discontinued the original formula and stopped shipping Coca-Cola Classic in U.S. stores during the transition.

Consumer backlash was immediate and intense. The company received thousands of complaints and saw a sharp drop in sales within weeks. On July 10, 1985, Coca-Cola announced the return of the original formula under the name Coca-Cola Classic. New Coke remained on shelves for a short period as a second option but never matched the sales of the classic version per Coca-Cola Company history.

Current Formula and Recent Recipe Adjustments

Today, Coca-Cola Classic uses a formula that is close to the pre-1985 original but is produced with modern ingredients and global supply standards. The company has adjusted sweeteners over time, including trials with cane sugar in some limited releases and reformulations to remove certain additives in response to health trends. Coca-Cola also offers zero-sugar, low-calorie, and flavored variants under the Coca-Cola brand.

The Coca-Cola Company remains one of the largest beverage companies by market capitalization and revenue, operating in more than 200 countries. Its formula is still protected as a trade secret, and the original recipe is stored in a purpose-built vault at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. Investors and analysts track product innovation, sugar reduction efforts, and brand strategy as key drivers of long-term valuation via SEC filings.
